Barcoding a circuit board manufacturing line has many challenges that must be considered. Labels must often fit in tight spaces and may have to withstand wave solder (including direct contact), reflow ovens, water washes, flux and harsh solvents without bubbling, smudging, shrinking or peeling. Careful consideration must be given to the base material of the label, the adhesive required, and the use of over-laminations for added durability.
Two types of labels are commonly used in these applications. For the harshest environments a kapton label or polyimide label is used. These labels can withstand sustained temperatures up to 750F and flash temperatures up to 1000F. Kapton labels come in standard white, buff and amber colors, however, new custom kapton labels are available in a variety of different colors as well. Polyester labels are used for top side labeling or where the boards will not be subject to wave solder or reflow. Universal Label Technologies offers both preprinted and blank kapton labels, polymide labels and polyester labels. You can visit our catalog to view our standard blank kapton labels. The catalog is broken down as follows:
ULT White Kapton®, Amber Kapton® & Buff Kapton® - Thermal transfer printable film with a permanent acrylic adhesive. It is ideal for barcoding, PCB & component labeling, as well as general purpose labeling applications that require a high durability Kapton label. Ideal for label requirements on circuit boards. Suitable for direct wave (bottom side) and IR reflow (top side) applications. Designed to withstand the various fluxes, cleaning solvents and molten solder encountered in the manufacture of printed circuit boards. Can withstand sustained temperatures up to 750F and flash temperatures up to 1000F.
ULT White Polyester Electronics - Thermal transfer printable film with a permanent acrylic adhesive. It is ideal for barcoding, PCB & component labeling, as well as general purpose labeling applications that require a high durability white label. This product is suitable for use in applications where high quality bar-code printing is critical. Adhesive is UV stable and material is well suited for harsh environment applications and top-side SMT application.
